How to Play Virtual Violin & Find the Right Notes
Unlike a guitar, an acoustic violin has a completely smooth, fretless ebony fingerboard. Violinists rely on muscle memory and ear training to place their fingers in the exact millimeter spot for perfect pitch.
Understanding Fingerboard Positions & Tapes
Beginner violinists use finger tape lines placed across the fingerboard in 1st Position:
- Open (0): The string ringing open without any fingers down.
- 1st Finger (1): Index finger placed about an inch past the nut (e.g. B on the A string).
- 2nd Finger (2 / 2b): High 2nd finger sits spaced apart; Low 2nd finger touches right up against the 1st finger.
- 3rd Finger (3): Ring finger (e.g. D on the A string).
- 4th Finger (4): Pinky finger — matches the same exact pitch as the next higher open string!
Use the "Open String Drone" buttons above to play a continuous background note (like D4 or A4) while you practice scales. When your finger lands on an in-tune note, you will hear a clean, resonant harmony with zero sound fluttering.

Arco (Bowing) vs Pizzicato (Plucking)
Toggle between Arco (sustained bow stroke) and Pizzicato (plucking the string with your index finger) using the style buttons above to hear the difference between a soaring symphonic lead and a light, playful acoustic rhythm!

Those colored stripes represent fingerboard tapes commonly used by violin teachers. They mark the exact positions for your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers across the G, D, A, and E strings in first position.
Click and hold on any note or string, or toggle the continuous drone button. This creates the sustained resonance of a horsehair bow drawing across the string rather than a quick pizzicato pluck.
